Federal Firearm Laws and Regulations

Federal

There are public places that have a "no guns allowed" policy even for gun owners who hold legal right-to-carry permitswhere state laws are pre-empted by federal law and no guns are allowed.


Prohibited Areas (federal)

  • Federal buildings (18 USC Section 930, 36 CFR Section 327.13)

    • Federal Courthouse and facilities

    • Prisons

    • United States Post Offices (18 USC Section 930, 39 CFR Section 232.1)

    • Ranger stations and visitor centers in any national forest or wilderness area are considered federal buildings, no guns are allowed inside these facilities

  • Airport secure areas (49 CFR Section 1540.111(a))

  • Commercial Aircraft: Check with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

  • Military bases (18 USC Section 930)

  • National cemeteries.  No guns are allowed on the grounds or adjacent parking areas of national cemeteries (38 C.F.R. Section 1.218(a)(13))

    “The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired, but nothing in this section shall be construed as authorizing individuals or corporations to organize, maintain or employ an armed body of men.”
