New Shooter 101 handgun training Program

Are YOu Trained or Untrained, that is the question...

We're here to help you get trained!

New Shooter 101 helps beginners learn to shoot.

Our training program is designed for beginners with no previous firearms knowledge.  You are welcome even if you have never fired a gun.  Here's how it works:
  1. Attend our Public Workshop events, which include handgun training presentations throughout the year.  You'll be able to work with experienced ADTA Instructors using SIRT laser training pistols.

  2. Learn by watching our New Shooter 101 videos at home.  We have two series of videos which help you learn to shoot skillfully and safely:
    • Watch our Core Concept Videos – they help you learn the basics of handgun safety and operation.
    • Watch our Workshop Videos –  see demonstrations of the type of training you receive in our Public Workshops.

  3. Join ADTA and attend our Live-Fire Practice Events.  This is where you put  your training to practical use – shooting in an open bay – the kind of training  you cannot get on your own shooting in target lanes.

If you know the basics of shooting a handgun, here's all it takes to attend ADTA Live-Fire Practice Events:

  1. Be able to hit this target using a handgun at a shooting range.
  2. Know basic firearm safety.
  3. Join ADTA and pass our background check.

If you want to shoot with ADTA and have never fired a gun before:

ADTA does not have the resources to train beginners.  But once you know the basics of shooting a handgun in a target lane, then we can help you learn to shoot skillfully and safely in defensive situations.  Our suggestions for getting started:
  • RECOMMENDED—Take a class at a shooting range.  Learn enough to shoot safely in a target lane.  Many ranges offer evening and weekend classes for beginners.
  • OR—Go shooting with a friend or family member.  This is an easy way to learn the basics of handgun operation and firearm safety.
  • OR—Go to the shooting range and rent a pistol.  The staff at the rental counter will be glad to help you get started shooting.

Once you know the basics of shooting a handgun, you're ready to start attending ADTA LIve-Fire Practice Events!
