    Event Description:

Would you like to learn how to shoot a handgun skillfully and safely? Then consider participating in our hands-on New Shooter 101 workshop!

You won't learn everything about shooting in this seminar.  Your take-away will be an understanding of how the New Shooter 101 training program works, and you will have the opportunity to meet some of the ADTA mentors who provide the training.

In a nutshell:  You learn by watching videos at home, then work with an experienced ADTA Mentor to practice the moves you saw. This way you build your skills at your own pace, knowing you will be safe while learning.

Click here to find out more about our New Shooter 101 program.  Then please join us at the seminar!

    Range Safety Officer (RSO) Training

Every ADTA event involving firearms; from dry-practice seminars to live-fire range exercises; requires the presence of attentive, knowledgeable Range Safety Officers (RSOs) to help ensure the safety of all participants.

The ADTA has developed its own Range Safety Officer program, focusing on semiautomatic pistols, revolvers, and supervising the safe execution of the defensive techniques frequently conducted at ADTA events.

Participation in this program is free to current ADTA members.  The ADTA, as an organization, is actively recruiting interested Range Safety Officers.  ADTA Range Safety Officers return the service to our club by agreeing to volunteer as an official ADTA RSO for one or more of our approximately twenty events each year.

Participants should be familiar with the operation and comfortable handling of semiautomatic pistols and revolvers.  Prior range safety officer training or equivalent experience is a plus, but not required.  NRA-certified RSOs are welcome to audit and help us refine this course; as policy, the ADTA recognizes any NRA-certified RSO as an appropriate RSO for ADTA events.

This course is taught by ADTA member Wu Chin an NRA-certified Range Safety Officer, and supported by several other ADTA members who have completed the ADTA-specific Range Safety Officer certification.

This two-part course is conducted as a morning presentation session (participants may keep a copy of all the course material for reference), a break for lunch (provided, or bring your own if you prefer), and a series of scenarios in which you'll be expected to assume the ADTA RSO role and responsibilities as we engage you with both common situations and complications you may encounter.

    Description

Do you carry a concealed weapon? If so, come to our Practical Carry Workshop. ADTA Instructor Randy Hayden will show you the things you need to consider for properly carrying your firearm concealed. There are things such as choosing the proper gun, proper holster, proper clothing, where you are and time of year, along with training and mindset. Come to our free ADTA workshop and you will learn all of that.

    Important information:

    • ADTA Range Safety Officers (RSOs) will be present to check you in at the door.
    • If you normally carry a firearm, you are welcome to do so at this event.

    • Loaded carry firearms must remain holstered -- no exceptions.

ADTA hosts 24 Free Public Workshops every year

We hold a regular, open-to-the-public monthly membership meeting in Federal Way on the second Thursday evening of each month, from 7pm to 9pm.  Each meeting includes a free presentation or hands-on workshop event; see our Events Calendar for upcoming details.

If you have questions about your membership, would like to join, or have questions about upcoming events, we try at the end of each meeting to have a membership coordinator with a laptop and Internet access available to assist you.

Dates and venues are typically established 1 to 3 months ahead.  Please check back in the week prior to any scheduled event for notices of content or venue changes.

We also sponsor 24 Live-Fire Practice Events per year

Regular live-fire practices are usually held on a Thursday in the second half of each month, 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Check our Events Schedule for current event details, venue changes, or time changes for special events.  Please note that we do not hold a regular live-fire practice on months where we conduct a Handgun Introduction and Mentoring Workshp; check the Events Schedule for details.

What To Expect

Perfect practice makes perfect.  All ADTA members are welcome to attend our regular monthly live-fire practices, frequently held at Federal Way Indoor Range and Bull's Eye Indoor Gun Range in Tacoma.  For two hours each month, we block out one of a shooting bay for our members' exclusive use.  Practice basic techniques with helpful ADTA members, and learn and practice advanced techniques downrange.

You must pre-register for ADTA live-fire events; there is a nominal fee (typically $20) to offset club costs.  Registration is available for all ADTA members.  Guests may attend to observe but may not participate in the event.

Events are supervised, typically by both an ADTA Event Coordinator or Instructor, and an ADTA Range Safety Officer.  At our regular monthly live-fire practices, the first 45 minutes is usually from-the-line group practice, and the last hour is usually used for unique downrange drills including shooting from cover, shooting while moving, multiple target engagement, shoot/no-shoot scenarios, pressure drills, low light drills, and more. Events are dynamic; we encourage you, as an ADTA member, to let us know what you'd like to practice when you attend.

Our regular monthly practices are suitable for ADTA members of all skill levels, from novices to advanced shooters.  You'll find your fellow ADTA members both helpful if you request assistance and attentive if you'd like to demonstrate a technique for others.  All events are member-led and member-instructed.

What To Bring

Bring your unloaded, cased firearms, eye protection, ear protection, a cap-style hat with a bill that extends over your shooting glasses, ammunition for your firearm, and a holster for your firearm.  Your holster must be strong-side, muzzle-down, and should be stiff enough that you can safely reholster with only a single hand.  At least two extra magazines, a magazine belt pouch, and a tactical flashlight are also recommended equipment, but not required.  We recommend attendees bring 100 to 200 rounds of ammunition.  Range retail counters also rent eye and ear protection and sell ammunition.

ADTA provides all the targets, target stands, cover, and event materials.

You are welcome to bring your regular concealed carry firearm with you to the event, but please leave it holstered until you are instructed to clear your weapon by our ADTA Range Safety Officer.  We run our events as a Cold Range, meaning firearms must be always be unloaded and left cased or holstered until you are at the line and instructed to load and make ready.

Dates for upcoming live fire events are normally established 1 to 3 months in advance.  We typically conduct one regular live fire practice event each month, except in months where we conduct a New Shooters' Clinic.
